It does seem Google is trying to set a new trend, or atleast let users have easy access to a 3D chat by trying to take users from other 3D chats and worlds. Yes, 3d chat is not new, but Google is trying to give it more life.
It looks like Google may be able to take some of those users, however Lively doesn't have much more than just a 3D chat which you can embed in your website. It's lacking an economy, a "world" and many other features in usual 3D chats and virtual worlds.
It seems like they plan to integrate some sort of economy with the ability to purchase items as seen in this screenshot from the Lively site. The price now is "FREE" but I'm sure that will change in the near future.

Once they have some sort of economy (or maybe using Google Checkout), I think they will be more of a competitor with virtual worlds like Second Life.
